Dear St. Gertrude - March 28, 2004

Dear St. Gertrude,
I’m always looking for the best question to start a conversation. I haven’t found any good questions lately. So, what do you think of these conversation starters? Or are they stoppers?

  • Peanuts are one of the ingredients in dynamite.
  • There are 293 ways to make change for a dollar.
  • There are more chickens than people in the world.
  • A dragonfly has a life span of 24 hours.
  • A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds.
  • It’s impossible to sneeze with your eyes open.
  • “”Stewardess”" is the longest word typed with only the left hand.
  • The longest one-syllable word in the English language is “”screeched”".
  • Men get hiccups more often than women.
  • Women can hear better than men.
  • Every day, more money is printed for the game of Monopoly than for the U.S.
  • Treasury.
  • Tigers have striped skin, not just striped fur.
  • The glue on postage stamps in Israel is certified kosher.
  • The average person falls asleep in seven minutes.
  • Maine is the only state whose name is just one syllable.

Well, if they don’t work, maybe we should go back to questions. Here’s one: Are you still finding time to read the “”little black book”"?

Last Saturday, we had some good conversations with some people from the Ismaili Center. Pax Christi invited our neighboring Muslims over to the rectory for a meal and some talk. The food was wonderful and the gathering was very interesting. Peter Buttitta came up with a very good question to go around the table. Actually, there were two questions. First we were asked what word you would use to describe the congregation to which you belong. And second, what word would you use to describe the other congregation (i.e. Catholics would describe the Ismaili congregation and the Ismaili’s would describe the Catholics). It was a very interesting way to get us talking to each other. Thanks to Pax Christi we had an enlightening Saturday evening.

I hope you will be able to come to the Reconciliation Service on Wednesday evening. It is in church at 7:30pm.

See you there,

WK
