Dear St. Gertrude - January 2, 2005
A new year begins and we are ready to take one more trip around the sun. That means we will go through winter-spring-summer-fall with 365 pulls of the lamp chain. We will take the well worn path on our intra-galactic highway, spinning and making our own weather while our fellow traveler, the moon, tags along like a little puppy. Some of the humans on our spaceship earth won’t make it all the way around, but they will be supplanted and more by the infusion of babies who are getting on for their first trip. Unfortunately many of those who won’t be here for the round trip will be killed at war or other violence.I hope that the little section called St. Gertrude parish sees our gravitational partner rise and set a few times, finds curiosity and friendship a stimulant, delights in new and old interests, meets new friends, finds worthwhile causes, takes life changing risks, overcomes burdensome habits, accepts unprecedented challenges and reads some Shakespeare.
The last trip around the sun seemed to me to have only a few really good movies (Vera Blake being my favorite). I didn’t listen to much music on the headphones (except The Mammals, who are great). I’ve turned sour on a lot of things: professional sports, CEO’s, the way presidential politics is presented, church management, TV, gourmet food, fashion clothes, celebrities, and our own country.
I see hope in trying to learn the truth; trying to see the beauty; trying to hear the harmony; trying to make that which connects; and trying to be kind. Happy New Year.
