Growing In Faith

Some of us thirst for messages from our bishops that give life and feed our hunger for a better world. Last week we re-introduced the US Bishops’ Peace Pastoral. Come heedfully, and listen to more quotes:“Faith does not insulate us from the challenges of life; rather, it intensifies our desire to help solve them precisely in the light of the good news. . . .”
“In light of the continuing endorsement found in papal teaching, we urge that the United States adopt a stronger supportive role with respect to the United Nations.”
“It is incumbent upon us to stress . . . the significance of [the pastoral constitution's] support for a pacifist option . . . and the reaffirmation that the popes have given to non-violent witness since the time of the [2nd Vatican] council.”
“We urge every Catholic to make the sign of peace at Mass an authentic sign of reconciliation with God and with one another. This sign is also a visible expression of our commitment to work for peace as a Christian community.”
“We must shape the climate of opinion which will make it possible for our country to express profound sorrow over the atomic bombing in 1945.”

August 6 is the anniversary of the destruction of Hiroshima; Nagasaki was bombed just three days later. May God sustain us as we “live up to the call of Jesus to be peacemakers.”
