Dear St. Gertrude - August 7, 2005
An update: Joe Swearingen is still at the Waterford, a rehabilitation center at Fargo and Sheridan Road. He has a number of ailments but his diabetes is causing the most problems these days. He would welcome a note or a visit. We miss him greatly. Miles Conway has taken over Joe’s duties at the ministry center for the time being. Joe hopes to be at the parish picnic, August 14.
Dorothy Godfrey, our sacristan and church warden, is at the Alden Northshore, 5050 West Touhy. She is recovering from a fall, high blood pressure, and overwork as a sacristan. She is getting back to her old self. She asks for our prayers.
Layton Yancy, our maintenance man, is working Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. He was in the hospital for tests and is now getting his strength back and the pounds which were lost. He always sings as he works and it is a great joy to have his song back. Next Sunday the Parish picnic will be held behind St. Scholastica High School. It begins at 10:30am with Mass. It continues through the afternoon with the usual picnic fare. There will be plenty of opportunity to join in the games, to converse with the parishioners, to do the maze and to just plain relax (while splitting an infinitive). Bring some food. Share with others.
Our planning for wonderful Wednesdays was broken into two groups, each one an original synod committee. The Prayer and Spirituality committee has agreed to do the Taize Prayer sessions with the help of Peter Buttitta. The classes, which tentatively will be called The Institute, will be guided by the Growing in Faith Committee. What all this means is that in October and the first half of November, Wednesdays will have a new meaning for our parish. I’m really looking forward to this new experiment. Plan on being there.
