Dear St. Gertrude - October 2, 2005

Let me tell you what it is like to have a play written about a main character who has your own name and seems to be about your life. That’s what happened last Saturday in the gym. It was called Mystic Daydreams and promised to tell how a confused pastor got that way. The main character was named Billy Kenneally and the tale described key figures in his life: Mom and Dad, brother Jack, and a dog named Buddy. It was astonishingly accurate in every detail except Buddy’s character was less refined in real life. The events which were portrayed were true and the names needed not to be changed because no one was innocent. The play was the highlight of my life - so far. I want to thank all who were involved including my Dad and Mom, Jack, and Buddy.I know we have been beating the drums for Wonderful Wednesdays. But I really want to ask you to come to Taizé prayer at 7pm and one of the courses at 8pm. The man who started the prayer in the 1940’s as a way of bringing the church together was just killed a month ago by a deranged woman in Taizé, France. The courses all sound very interesting. I think it is difficult to get into the mood for going back to school. But this will be real adult education with real good teachers about real interesting things. Please come.

So I can’t write to you about the White Sox, or the archdiocese, or the Bears, or the administration, or the war. Life has taken some very odd turns. I’m going to Stratford, Ontario to see some Shakespeare. I’ll be back on Friday. God bless.
