Dear St. Gertrude - November 6, 2005
I came back to the parish for a short time this week. The staff is handling everything very well and all seems well. Our business manager ran a marathon in Dublin; our secretary got a flu shot and caught a cold; the pastoral associate doubled as the musician/cantor at the 5pm Mass last Saturday; Sue Jungers, our religious ed person, is caring for her ailing husband; various members of the parish are taking William’s place until we decide on a successor; all the various celebrants at Mass have been very adaptable; and life goes on in the parish. We have one Wednesday left for the Taizé prayer and the various courses. There is talk about adding Wednesday, November 16, to the Taizé prayer schedule. That is the feast of St. Gertrude and it might be a way of celebrating your feast. We will announce what is decided later.
The whole situation of being sick and very dependent is for the birds. I know there are many people who find themselves limited and now I can be much more sympathetic for their plight. Whether it is age or sickness, or other circumstances when we are taken out of our routine, stripped of what comes natural and what we are used to, made to feel somewhat useless and unproductive as well, it is no vacation. In fact it is a lot harder than what we usually call work. But we all have to learn how to play the cards we are dealt.
I’m glad I do not have to worry about the parish and I’m glad about the care I have been given. Thanks for your prayers and your patience. The last procedure will be on Wednesday, November 9, and I’ll be back soon after that.
God Bless,
WK
