Dear St. Gertrude - May 7, 2006

Did we have a fund-raiser for Northside Catholic Academy! and! You wouldn’t believe what a fun time and perfectly planned event we experienced last Saturday at the Simpson Building of Loyola University, corner of Sheridan and Winthrop. So first of all let me tell you who coordinated this Taste of NCA: Elizabeth Boccio-Hunt, Rose Cancilla, Sara Ellis, Kristi Erickson, Colleen Evans, Grace Fong, Janine Hart, Valency Hastings, Leigh Holzman, Diana Monier, Sean Martin, Sue Plomin, Walter Pophin, Andrea Raila, Olivia Szrom, Anne Troy, Maureen Volini, and Amy Zajakowski-Uhll.This dynamic set of parents played every card, pulled out every stop, made every trick, slam-dunked, and high-fived - all the while appearing as cool as cool could be. Everything from the program book to Dr. Fred Martin as emcee, to the selection of wines and the collection of generous gifts, provided such a feeling of mission, hospitality, elegance, competence, and downright pleasure, that we were able to slip $50,000 from parents and friends of NCA to be used for the needs of the school. It was painless and priceless and positively perfect. Thanks to the coordination, the many generous suppliers (a list next week), and a most generous 200 people who came that evening, it was the most effective fund raiser we have ever had.

And speaking of ground breaking evenings, there is one coming up this Wednesday. I know you will be there to hear Fr. Dom Grassi, who will be giving us some clues about what makes him the pastor he is. The old guy will also have a chance to reminisce, and the people of your favorite parish will tell us some dreams they have for the place. The parishioners will have a chance to recapitulate some of the things said about the parish at the meeting we had with Bishop Kane. That’s on Wednesday with the whole thing starting at 7pm with Taizé prayer. It should be another phenomenal event. See you there.
