Growing in Faith
Today we hear from the Scriptures that our God is the God of Abraham. The same God of Muslims and Jews. His name is “”I AM”"; S/He encompasses everything, every thing that Is is only in GodAs a young college student one of the watershed moments of my adult faith development was being struck by the Prayer in Praise of God by St Francis of Assisi which declares, You ARE Beauty, You ARE Truth, You ARE Love, You ARE Gentleness, You ARE Truth, You ARE Rest, You ARE Joy, You ARE Courage, You ARE Wisdom… My 20 year old soul was awed as I realized, God isn’t merely loving, S/he IS LOVE; S/he isn’t merely joyful-S/he IS JOY. Well then this must mean that everything that is beautiful, true, and joyful has God in it! My experience of God is not limited to going to mass, S/he is near every time I see and hear beauty, true words, and people are joyful. Some of God is present. This makes it easy to feel a sense of community even with those who do not explicitly have faith in God. For everyone I have ever known is drawn to things that are true, music or faces that are beautiful. I prefer to think that they are worshipping God, but just don’t realize it yet.
