St. Gertrude Parish
Religious Education Program (C.C.D.)

CCDWebsiteBrochureWhat is the Religious Education Program?

The program offers religion classes for children in  grades 1-8 who attend public and non-Catholic private  schools.  They learn the stories of our faith, join in service to others, and pray together.

How do we register?

Registration forms are available at the rectory, 1420 West Granville.  Or call the rectory at (773)764?3621 if you would like a form mailed to you.

When do classes begin?

Classes begin in late September and take place on Sunday mornings from 8:45-9:45 am.  Consult the bulletin for the exact starting date, or call the rectory.  Once you register, a confirmation letter with the starting date and a schedule of classes for the year will be sent to you.

Where do the classes take place?

The classes for grades 1-6 take place in the Northside Catholic Academy school building, 6216 North Glenwood; 7th and 8th grades meet in the rectory, 1420 West Granville.

Who teaches the children?

St. Gertrude parishioners and Loyola University students take on this service of sharing their faith with the children.  They receive training and ongoing support from the parish staff.

Does the program help prepare children for the sacraments?

Yes.  Sacramental preparation is an integral part of the curriculum in 2nd grade (for Reconciliation and First Communion) and 8th grade (for Confirmation).  Children who have missed a sacramental year receive supplemental instruction.

What is the fee for this program?

The fee is $50.00 for one child and $75.00 for two or more children.  No one is excluded from religious education for financial reasons.  Please contact the rectory if you have any questions or concerns.

What is taught in class?

We use the textbook series Finding God: Our Response to God’s Gifts (Loyola Press).  It is a Catholic faith formation program that incorporates the spirituality of St. Ignatius, guiding and mentoring children into a life of prayer and a lifelong relationship with God. Rooted in Scripture and tradition with a variety of prayer experiences, the Finding God religious education program offers a balanced approach to doctrine, Catholic Social Teachings, and prayer to encourage children to use what they are learning in Church and in life.

What are the goals of the Religious Education Program?

The children will:

  • Show respect and concern for God’s creation, including self, others, and the environment.
  • Understand and celebrate the liturgical seasons and the sacramental life of the church.
  • Develop knowledge of the Bible, as well as the doctrine, traditions, and history of the church.
  • Become aware of the importance of prayers, and have a basis for personal prayer.
  • Be a witness to the Gospel by learning to serve the needs of others.

Whom should I call if I have additional questions?

Ann O’Connor, Religious Formation Coordinator, will be happy to talk to you.  Please call her at the rectory, (773) 764?3621.
