Greetings,

Roy Bourgeois will be receiving an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Chicago Theological Seminary this Saturday morning as part of its 2012 graduation ceremony. Roy will also be presenting the talk to the graduates at that time.
The public is invited to the graduation and reception, here is the information:

The graduation service will be at the Apostolic Church, 6300 South Dorchester.
There are 3 lots surrounding the church where guests can park.

Commencement begins at 10:30am.
A reception will follow at Chicago Thelogical Seminary, 1407 E. 60th Street, about three blocks north from Apostolic Church in CTS’ 4th floor dining room.

Please pass this information to others you think might want to celebrate with Roy.

Thanks.

“A Q U E S T I O N O F H A B I T”

Tuesday, May 15, 7 p.m. Oldershaw Hall St. Nicholas Church Ridge Ave., south of Main St., in Evanston Writer, producer and director Bren Ortega Murphy, Ph.D., will show and discuss her full length documentary film, “A Question of Habit”, narrated by Susan Sarandon. The film examines the depiction of Catholic nuns in contemporary U.S. popular culture.

It contrasts these images with the lives of actual women religious, both historical and current. Although most Roman Catholic women religious in the U.S. have not worn the full habits of their orders for over 40 years, images of nuns and sisters in such habits can be found in numerous and surprising aspects of pop culture. The film looks at the nature, scope and significance of these images, as well as possible explanations for their increasing popularity and possible impact on our understanding of women religious. Murphy holds joint appointments in the School of Communications and Women Studies/Gender Studies at Loyola University Chicago.

All,

The announcement last week by the Vatican to reform the women religious represented by the LCWR has touched off much dialog and desire to support these women and the people that they serve.

Women at Old St. Patrick’s Catholic Church are hosting an evening to pray with, celebrate, honor and thank the vowed religious women of the Catholic Church who
…feed the poor
…clothe the naked
…comfort the sick
…educate the youth
…visit the prisoner
…console the sorrowing
…cherish the earth!

ALL are welcomed to attend.

Our hope is to fill the church and show our support on Thursday, May 10 at 7
p.m.

(doors open early and there will be a reception).
I hope you can join us and invite others who might have an interest in praying with us.

Thank you in advance for sharing this invitation,
Laura Field

THE MAGNIFICAT, CANTICLE OF MARY (Luke 1:46ff)

And Mary said:
“My soul proclaims your greatness, O God;
my spirit rejoices in you, my savior.
For you have looked upon your handmaid’s lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
You, O Mighty One, have done great things for me,
and holy is your name.
Your mercy is from age to age
for those who hold you in awe.
You have shown might with your arm,
dispersing the arrogant of mind and heart.
You have thrown down the rulers from their thrones
but lifted up the lowly.
The hungry you have filled with good things;
the rich you have sent away empty.
You have helped Israel your servant,
remembering your mercy,
according to the promise you made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and Sarah, and to their descendants forever.”
